5 places to shop from indie bookshops online - Bookshop Day 2021

Today, 9th October, is Bookshop Day in the UK!

Bookshops are one of the best places on Earth - but it’s not always feasible to get to one in person. So, if you prefer to order your books online - or maybe you want to pre-order a particular book, because that’s one of the best ways of supporting an author - I’ve rounded up 5 places to shop online, whilst still supporting indie businesses (and therefore not giving B*zos any of your pesos.)

(p.s. this is a shameless copy of a post we did last year on Business Proposal, but slightly updated)

#1 uk.bookshop.org

With bookshop.org you can either shop directly from your favourite local bookstore's profile, and all of the profits will go to them, or you can buy from them generally, and then all those earnings are evenly split between indie bookshops. They give over 75% of their profit margin to stores, publications & authors!

You can check out my affiliate list of the books I’ve recommended in the newsletter so far below…

#2 Hive

Every single order on Hive gives money back to an independent book shop - and you can choose which one at checkout! My money goes to the brilliant New Beacon Books, who are local to me.

#3 biggreenbookshop.com

I mean, it’s described as an “enthusiast-run” bookshop, so we can’t really go wrong, can we?!

The Big Green Bookshop is a brilliant independent bookshop "selling awesome titles by awesome authors to awesome people."

Plus, every Wednesday they do a #buyastrangerabook campaign, where you can (as you can probably guess) gift a stranger a book.

#4 Wordery

I’m sure you’ve all heard of wordery - independent, ethical, and pay all their taxes. What else could you possibly want?

#5 Your local bookshop

And, of course, go and visit your local bookshop! Or if you can't get to them in person, see if they have a website or you can order online. They'll be happy to help you in whatever way they can - and to chat books with you!
