Elise is The Messy Creative, and a whole lot more. She's also, I think, my soul sister, describing herself as an avid mess maker (ask anyone who knows me and they shall confirm the same is true of me), a craft enthusiast (errrr, yes), a lover of weddings (I mean...hello) and obsessed with Christmas. Elise, we were separated at birth. Apart from, ya know, the fact she makes incredibly beautiful lino prints (available here on Etsy) and has the most enviable hair in the whole land (JUST LOOK AT IT). Elise and I had a good ol' chinwag and made some mess and magic, and I found a new fave descriptor - jag. Elise is JAG.
What are you enthusiastic about?
I'm pretty multi-faceted when it comes to things I love and rave about, so I will do my top 4:
- my frenchie, Milo (I am quite sure everyone is bored of me talking about him and his squishy face)…
- I am obsessed with craft, art and making things - my spare bedroom is my messy studio space and I spend as much time in there as I possibly can!
- Talking to people about what they love doing/ what they dream of doing and how that can be possible… I’m kind of the go to for my friends when they want to talk about doing stuff you love & I love talking about it with them, bonus!
- WEDDINGS! I planned mine & tied the knot last June. I DIY'd loads of the decor and my mum made my dress, we had a mexican fiesta theme and a huge party, what isn't to love?! I then helped one of my best friends plan her day and now I'm helping her future sister-in-law who gets married in July - yay!
Why do you keep doing what you're doing?
Making and creating is part of me, I genuinely cannot remember a time when I haven’t been doing something creative. When I was struggling with my mental health I found creativity was a massive part of the healing process for me – I signed up to a 10-week printmaking course and completely rediscovered my love of making a mess and creating beautiful things, printmaking is now the focus of my small biz!
What's the impact you want to make?
I want to make pretty things people want to have in their homes, and one day I want to help people live creative lives and see the value in doing something they love (DREAM!)… I haven’t made many sales so far, but I still do it because I absolutely love doing it, and to me that is so important!
Best advice you've ever been given?
Just go for it! When I first started thinking about setting up an Etsy shop I was in procrastination mode, I had set up an Instagram page (which I kept anonymous for about 10 months!) and one of my friends turned around and told me to just bloody well get on with it! She then purchased a website domain for my birthday… It was the kick up the bum I needed, but I still found it incredibly scary, and kind of still do!
Who's your Enthusiastic hero?
Ah this is a difficult one… My dad is pretty great, he’s mainly grumpy but when he loves something it’s described by him as ‘JAG’ (as in the car, Jaguar), it’s become a go to word in our family to describe amazing things! I encourage you to try using it, e.g: ‘wow this cake is JAG!’
If money were no object, what would you be doing?
Travelling in a converted campervan in warmer climates, talking to people about what their dreams are and how to make it happen (I’m a bit of a dreamer and biz nerd!) and making art along the way – all the things that light me the hell up!
